Original Xbox: Last hidden ROM dumped after 25 years
6 november 2026
After twenty-five years, the original Xbox's last hidden ROM has finally been dumped. Modder MakeMhz, known as @lovemhz on X, announces that the CPU microcode has now been saved. The work has been ongoing off and on for over six years, as reported by the developer on X. Over the past few weeks, a test Xbox has rebooted over 50,000 times while running hardware tests around the clock. The dump covers the entire 4,096-line microcode address space, with the ROM itself occupying 3,200 lines, roughly 12 kilobytes. The ROM belongs to Intel and will not be released directly, but MakeMhz is working with others on tools so users can dump it themselves. A full write-up is coming next year.
